TRUSTED MACHINING

CAPABILITIES

YOU NEED HIGH-QUALITY MACHINED PARTS DELIVERED ON TIME, FROM PROTOTYPING TO
HIGH-VOLUME. THAT’S WHAT WE DO.

Founded in 1945, Cass Precision Machining serves you from a five-building campus—including over 125,000 square feet of production space—located in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. We’re experts in Swiss Machining, CNC Machining, Screw Machining and Grinding. Over the years we’ve worked with many types of materials including alloy, carbon and stainless steels, aluminums, brasses, bronzes, tubing and a wide variety of machinable plastics. We provide you with “complete parts” by adding coordinated services such as anodizing, plating, heat treating, shot peening, light assembly, warehousing, custom packaging and more—always ensuring we meet the quality specifications of your finished part.

We design and manufacture our tooling in-house, which shortens delivery lead times and aids in quick validation of DFM efforts, particularly on prototype orders. Our expanded warehouse and shipping / receiving areas support customized JIT programs on high-volume production runs, which at times, run in the millions.

GRINDING

Precision grinding is most commonly used when a material is too hard to machine efficiently or when the tolerances required are too precise for machining.

Cass Precision Machining’s grinding services include Cylindrical Grinding, Centerless Grinding, and Centerless Infeed Style Grinding. We grind a wide variety of materials, including steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, and stainless steel, to your specifications.

Operating from one of our five buildings on the Cass campus, our Precision Grinding Department features thirteen grinding machines, eliminating the need to add another supplier for grinding operations while shortening overall delivery lead times. We run Cincinnati, Bryant, Shigiya, Supertec, and Royal Master grinding equipment. We use CNC controls and auto-loaders to handle high-quantity orders efficiently.

Cylindrical grinding is the grinding of circular or cylindrical parts between centers to achieve as much “roundness” of the part as possible. Cylindrical grinding machines coordinate four essential actions: The work part must constantly be rotating. The grinding wheel must constantly be rotating. The grinding wheel is fed towards and away from the work. Either the part or the grinding wheel is traversed with respect to the other. Cylindrical grinding machines are frequently fitted with automation to improve the grinding process’s efficiency and accuracy.

We operate four cylindrical grinding machines at Cass. Two machines are fully CNC controlled, and the other machines have two grind axes and feature autoloaders. Our CNC grinders are fitted with in-process gauging for continuous monitoring of dimensional compliance as specified. The higher complexity of the grinding requirements on parts like shafts, rollers, bearing journals, cores, mandrels, taper grinds, and more, the better the match with cylindrical grinding equipment.

Centerless grinding is used to achieve roundness, surface finish, and dimensional tolerances among the best available in metalworking. Centerless grinding incorporates the use of two wheels, a regulating wheel and a grinding wheel. It differs from other cylindrical grinding processes in that your parts are not mechanically constrained. Instead, the part is located in the “grinding zone” between the grinding wheel and the regulating wheel on a workpiece support. The rotating grinding wheel and regulating wheel put the part into rotation and remove material. Grinding pressure from the grinding wheel presses the part against the regulating wheel and the workpiece support. The rotating regulating wheel provides the counter-pressure required for grinding.

Standard centerless grinders can be configured for high-speed parts loading by slightly tilting the regulating wheel in relation to the grinding wheel and work piece support. The speed and inclination angle of the regulating wheel together determine the part feed rate. The result is a grinding process that is exceptionally efficient as the machine can be loaded while grinding is underway. Parts can flow through centerless grinders at speeds well over 1000 pieces per hour, holding OD grinding costs for parts like pins, spacers, rollers, bushings, and more to a minimum with rapid delivery responsiveness.

We operate nine Centerless precision grinding machines at Cass. Four machines are configured as standard Centerless grinders. The second group of four machines are set up as Centerless infeed style machines and have parts loaded up to a fixed stop to assure precise and consistent part finish results at high speeds. The ninth machine is configured for thru feed bar grinding of various brass, bronze, and steel materials.

Our customers tell us they are thrilled with our ability to ship on time – every time. Quick responses to quote requests are a priority for us. From prototype through high-volume production run orders, we make sure we acknowledge every order we receive so you know in advance what you can expect from our team. In addition, our DFM (Design for Manufacturability) resources are available to help you review and optimize the total costs of your parts. Changes happen, but you can be confident we will support your needs and minimize the hassles. We can make sure that changes in your part design or delivery requirements are quickly deployed into manufacturing so you don’t skip a beat. You can count on us to be there for you for the long haul. Consistent. Reliable. Trusted.

Cass has developed a baseline quality assurance system that guarantees we will ship high-quality parts – on every order. Everything we make passes several in-process checks and a final inspection, or it won’t go out the door. When your requirements dictate, we can customize our baseline system to your specifications, tailoring our quality-assurance system to fit your business needs. We are experienced with quality-assurance tools—SPC, PPAP Cpk, 1st Articles and more—to help you get exactly the results you require in your precision machined parts. Come visit us and check out our systems. We think you’ll like what you see.

To sustain our ability to ship on time – every time, we recently completed a 26,000 sq. ft. expansion to our warehousing, shipping and receiving areas. The added space dramatically improves material flow within our campus and improves efficiencies in our shipping and receiving functions. With the larger warehouse we are able to provide inventory release management programs, which improves the production flow of your lines while allowing us to run optimized quantities under blanket orders. Consistent. Reliable. Trusted.
